43Vision Compares Custom Lens Replacement vs. RLE

Dec 9, 2022

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma -

December 09, 2022 - /PressAdvantage/ - 43Vision, a vision correction center in Oklahoma City, OK, has recently released an article on their website that is titled, “Custom Lens Replacement vs. Refractive Lens Exchange: Is There a Difference.” The article explains that Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), sometimes called Custom Lens Replacement (CLR), offers an accurate and long-lasting solution for visual changes caused by aging on the eye’s natural lens. RLE and CLR are actually the same procedure where the natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) with the goal of eliminating refractive errors and restoring eyesight.

Dr. Luke Rebenitsch, a vision correction surgeon at 43Vision, says, “CLR and RLE are two alternative names for the same treatment. The procedures are also sometimes even referred to as a clear lens exchange or clear lens extraction. No matter which name you decide to call it, the process of removing the natural lens that the eye uses to refract light and replacing it with an artificial lens to improve visual perception is the same for these procedures.”

Meanwhile, regardless of the kind of artificial intraocular lens implanted, the patient may need to wear some kind of corrective lens on certain occasions. But with the appropriate IOLs, the patient may benefit from a vastly improved vision and lessen or even totally get rid of the need to wear glasses.

The patient should expect to spend two to three hours in the office during the day the procedure is scheduled. This includes the preliminary tests, which are the same tests they conducted during the patient’s comprehensive consultation. The actual procedure will typically take around 15 to 30 minutes to complete.

The intraocular lenses used have been designed to last a lifetime. Thus, it will never need to be replaced because it will not degrade over time just like a conventional contact lens. However, patients are encouraged to carefully follow the post-procedure recommendations of their surgeon to protect their IOLs.

RLE can also be used for treating dysfunctional lens syndrome (DLS), which is the gradual loss of vision due to the aging of the natural lens of the eye. The natural lens is typically transparent and flexible but it gradually loses its flexibility and becomes cloudier as the person ages. The RLE procedure is effective in treating DLS because the natural lens is replaced with a new intraocular lens that is translucent and permits light to go through. Modern IOLs may even be multifocal, accommodating, or toric to offer solutions for various problems.

The RLE procedure has been noted to be a safe and painless surgical procedure. A local anesthetic eye drop is administered before the procedure to make it painless. When the effects of the anesthesia finally wear off, patients often experience brief and mild discomfort. And in the days after the procedure, patients will typically experience some itching around the eye or some minor discomfort, but his will gradually go away after a few days. Most of the time, over-the-counter pain medication will be more than enough to alleviate any discomfort.

Patients will be able to return to their daily chores on the day after the procedure. With regards to exercise, patients are advised to start with light exercises three days after the surgery and then get back to vigorous exercise one week later.

Founded in 2022, 43Vision is a sister practice of ClearSight LASIK, one of the top vision correction centers in the country. It is the first vision correction practice that is focused on the treatment of patients who are 43 years old and up who want to get rid of their reading glasses or bifocals. They apply the most modern technology for treating the effects of presbyopia, including avoiding the possibility of cataracts in the future. This vision correction center relies on the expertise of a team of vision correction surgeons: Drs. Luke Rebenitsch, Kasey Brown, and Anna Edmiston. A team of optometrists also provide assistance at the practice, namely: Drs. Diane Tong, Stephen Fly, and Stacey Rockett.
