Based on the type of surgery required, the patients will then need to find a practitioner who is experienced in that particular field – preferably with a track record of success and minimal complications.

While quality metrics such as number of complications may be tempting to use as a blanket criterion when choosing a surgeon, they can often be misleading: an experienced surgeon taking on the more complicated cases will often have a higher rate of complications than a novice at the start of their career.
