Suburban Plumbing, an Orange County, California plumbing company rated amongst the best plumbers in Brea, has been stressing its premium and highly effective trenchless sewer repair as part of its revamped commercial and residential services menu, its plumbing repairs experts applying the minimally-invasive technique to repair damaged drain pipes without major excavation work.
“Unbeknownst to most people, sewer repair of the trenchless type has been around since the 1940s, but it really came to the forefront of plumbing sciences in the 1970s through the introduction of structural pipe lining, a pipe rehabilitation technique first developed in Europe that is now widely used in America,” states Johnnie Maynard, owner, operator and master plumber of Suburban. “Trenchless technology essentially equates to working without trenches – long, narrow ditches – or engaging in underground construction work without extensive digging, the main benefit of which is that companies like ours can perform a lot of work and inspection without having to re-route traffic or dig a trench through a living room.
“It’s also faster than conventional methods, and can usually get the job done in hours rather than days – a fact we have been stressing to our treasured customer base in Brea and beyond.”
According to professionals like Maynard, the benefits of the trenchless tactic range from time-savings and cost-effectiveness to minimal invasiveness, no property destruction, overall effectiveness compared to traditional methods and longevity, being that the trenchless approach is designed to last decades.

The four most common types of trenchless repair include cured-in-place-pipe lining (also referred to as structural pipe lining), spray lining and brush coating, pipe bursting and slip lining; the cured-in-place method involves creating a new pipe within the old one by inserting an epoxy-soaked liner into the damaged pipe and leaving it to cure for several hours. When it is removed, say Suburban Plumbing representatives, the pipe is as good as new.
The spray lining and brush coating method is similar to structural pipe lining, but rather than a felt liner being used to create a new inner pipe, an epoxy or flexible polymer is sprayed or brushed onto the inside of the damaged one. Pipe bursting, meanwhile, is used by companies like Suburban to replace a damaged pipe by utilizing a winch with an attached bursting head to pull a brand-new HDPE pipe into the old one; the old pipe is broken and the new one takes its place.
Slip lining dates all the way back to the 1940s and encompasses inserting a smaller diameter pipe into the damaged one and then filling the area around it with grout. Though this method is considered a trenchless technique, it’s more invasive, according to Suburban reps, than the other approaches because a bigger pit needs to be dug in order to lower the new inner replacement pipe sections.
“Whether or not trenchless repair will work for a specific customer really depends on the condition of their damaged pipe,” adds Maynard. “For example – if the pipe is collapsed, backpitched or improperly graded, the trenchless method may not be ideal. The only way to know for sure if this technique will work for a particular problem is to contact a sewer replacement contractor qualified to repair damaged sewers, like Suburban Plumbing.”
In addition to effective trenchless sewer solutions, Suburban offers a range of plumbing services such as water heater repair, general commercial plumbing repair and slab leak repair.
