With A New Dawn for Harlem, the New York City Council Candidacy initiative of Dawn Simmons, the Harlem Blues Cafe held it’s first major event of the year. The cafe, in business for only less than a year, saw another successful night of the use of it’s coffeshop and event space on Tuesday, January 17th, as Harlem residents came out for an evening with Harlem’s own Dawn Simmons and Harlem Blues Cafe’s Fatih Beqiri. The fundraiser proved rising local support of the Harlem community for Candidate Simmons and the Harlem Blues Cafe with a large crowd rotation of approximately 70 people attending the event at the intimate space and regardless of the storming weather.

Harlem residents came out to the new Harlem Blues Cafe to have a night of food, drinks and community dialogue with Dawn Simmons, Harlem Resident, Activist, and NYC Council Candidate for District 9. Dawn Simmons and her A New Dawn for Harlem party utilized the Harlem Blues Cafe as an event space to meet with local Harlemites and provide a space for people to give their voices an opportunity to speak with Candidate Simmons about a range of political issues and potential resolutions for the District 9 community. As the fundraiser also promoted Simmons’ campaign run to fill the seat of New York City Council for District 9, the Harlem community spent time with Dawn Simmons at Harlem Blues’ to learn more about her extensive background and what she hopes to do to create more of community-oriented changes with her political initiative and hopeful election to become a NYC Council Member.

Fatih Beqiri, Partnering Leader of the Harlem Blues Cafe, explained: “The Harlem Blues Cafe is honored to be chosen to provide a likeable space for this milestone political event for the Harlem community and New York City! Dawn Simmons has the very impressive well-rounded experience, heart and dedication to making positive changes for Harlem, and what a nice lady and great NYC Council Candidate that is for the people, Dawn makes. It is a blessing for the Harlem Blues Cafe to hold events of such great importance for this community. Candidate Simmons’ event brings a beautiful beginning for the Harlem Blues Cafe event space in 2017. It’s awesome that people love Harlem Blues Cafe for more than our coffee, our freshly made crepes and croissants, we work very hard for the community we love.”

Dawn Simmons is one of 12 Candidates in running for the February 2017 Special Election for NYC Council District 9, the New York City area covering parts of the Upper West Side, Harlem and Morningside Heights. According to the Dawn Simmons campaign website, ElectDawnSimmons.com, also known as DawnforCityCouncil.com:
“By electing Dawn Simmons, you’ll be giving Harlem a real voice on the floor of the City Council. She won’t be beholden to the business as usual politicians or the political clubhouses and special interests that put them in office.”

Simmons entails being a fourth-generation Harlem resident, a former Social Worker and NYC School Teacher, Community Advisory Board Member for Harlem Community Hospital, Activist for Criminal Justice Reform, Graduate of Columbia University with a Masters In Social Work and much more.
