Healthy Human Launches Recover and Recycle Program in Partnership With Verdn and Empower AS

Refillable water bottle retailer Healthy Human has launched a new Recover and Recycle program in partnership with Verdn. Now, when customers purchase a Healthy Human Stein water bottle or Cruiser tumbler, they’ll also recover and recycle 1kg (2.2 lb) of ocean plastic, the equivalent of 80 plastic bottles. Every year, 8 million tonnes of plastic flow to the ocean, the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic per minute. By selling impact with its products, Healthy Human empowers its customers to help reduce the huge problem of ocean plastic.

Healthy Human has partnered with the startup Verdn to track and manage the collection of ocean plastic for this program. The Verdn platform provides a transparent and traceable impact that customers can monitor. It shows them where the plastic was collected and when. Verdn designed its impact automation this way because research shows that customers care more about personal impact than company-wide impact. According to a study by the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and Futerra, customers prefer to buy products with a clearly communicated impact rather than researching company-wide policies or social responsibility reports.

Verdn works with the Norwegian firm Empower AS to collect the plastic. Active in 15 countries, including areas near some of the most polluted rivers in the world, Empower AS ensures that plastic is removed from the rivers that feed it into the oceans. The company has established drop-off collection points where the plastic items are digitally registered using blockchain technology. The system promotes collection by offering waste-pickers a financial reward for retrieving plastic, which in turn improves the local environment and economy. Once the plastic is digitally registered, according to the company’s website, “This creates transparency and traceability and allow[s] us to map waste flows and to ensure that the plastic ends up where it has the highest value and the lowest cost to society.”
