This week, the TRU Blanket, a newly designed weighted blanket, launches on Kickstarter. Created by TRU Lite Bedding, the TRU Blanket improves on previous designs for these therapeutic blankets resulting in more evenly distributed weight and improved comfort for users. The product launches with a $147 price point for early pledges.

The TRU Blanket’s innovative design builds on the success of previous weighted blankets, which have long been used in various settings to help create a sensation of calm and support healthy sleep habits. The effect of weight on the body is known as Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation. The heavy blankets are created to be roughly 10% or more of of the user’s body weight, which creates a uniform pressure throughout the body. This creates a calming and soothing effect that has been associated with multiple positive bodily reactions that can support people with difficulties such as anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia.

Previous iterations of weighted blankets have been widely received with enthusiasm, but they have also had drawbacks that the TRU Lite team decided to address directly. The most common complaint, they found, was that the fill material for the weighted blankets could bunch up in spots throughout the blanket. The team decided to rethink the TRU Blanket’s stitching pattern to create a more even distribution of weight. There are also more ties, which serve as the points of contact between the outer minkey duvet material and the inner blanket.

Another major change in the TRU Blanket is the fill material which creates the weight. Plastic materials are a concern for many who are sensitive to chemicals and odors, which can negate the benefits of the weighted blanket for many. Instead of using larger plastic beads as filler material, the TRU Blanket’s weight comes from non-toxic glass beads. These tiny beads are roughly the size of a grain of sand, but cleaned and polished. This also serves to create a more uniform experience and counter the issues of weight clumping and bunching.

Jason Spahr, TRU Lite Bedding’s CEO, describes his own personal experience, “You could say the TRU Blanket is a family affair. My son suffered from anxiety and would not go to sleep in his own bedroom, no matter what we tried. When I learned of the benefits of weighted blankets, I knew I had to give it a shot. It was exactly what he needed, and he’s finally sleeping in his own bed now. After seeing firsthand the benefits, I knew we had to bring this product to our lineup. We’ve used our own personal experience and user feedback to design the most comforting blanket possible, and we’re very proud of the TRU Blanket.”

TRU Lite Bedding’s Kickstarter campaign contains more information on design, details, and benefits of the TRU Blanket. They are available in single, double, and multiple packages for various customer needs.
