Educated in Colombia, Dr. Arenas graduated with his medical degree from the Colombian School of Medicine (Universidad El Bosque) in 1987. He then relocated to the United States, performing his residency in general surgery at Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center in 1996, and his fellowship in transplant surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Prior to his current endeavors, Dr. Arenas served as Division Chief of Transplant Surgery at Penn State (January 2022 - December 2022), as Chief of the Memorial Transplant Institute with Memorial Healthcare System (September 2016 - January 2022), and as Division Chief of Transplant Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center (January 2007 - August 2016).
Organ transplantation is a medical procedure in which an organ is removed from one body and placed in the body of a recipient, to replace a damaged or missing organ. The donor and recipient may be at the same location, or organs may be transported from a donor site to another location. A transplant surgeon is a surgeon who performs organ transplants.
