While the new technique is not yet in standard use at most clinics, it has been researched and perfected over 15 years in France and Australia and has eliminated or reduced several of the most common issues with ACL surgery. One key benefit of this new technique is a 50% reduction in damage to the client’s hamstrings.
Using the traditional technique, a surgeon would be required to harvest two hamstrings and cause significant damage to the Gracilis muscle. With the new method, specialists at MSK Doctors can harvest only one hamstring, and reduce the damage to the Gracilis muscle, which has been shown to help clients recover faster.
The new surgical method also makes several smaller improvements, such as using outside-in drilling, superior tape and screw affixation, and a press-fit design. Together, these changes have been shown to provide a stronger fixation of 1500 N, compared to the traditional surgery which provides 900 N, and this has resulted in a higher success rate and lower risk of post-surgery injury.
Clients can also use the new fast-access feature from MSK Doctors to get near-immediate appointments for a wide range of diagnostic scans. The clinic has access to X-rays, MRIs, and the only Open MRI scanner in the county, which allows scans to capture joints even when they are in motion.
