Get to know Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Michael W. Fitzgibbons, who serves patients in California.

A California native, Dr. Fitzgibbons was born in Berkeley. He then went on to graduate with his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. in 1976.
His internship and residency in internal medicine were completed at University of California, Irvine Medical Center, followed by a two-year fellowship in infectious disease under the tutelage of Lauri Thrupp, MD, and Jeremiah Tilles, MD. At the former Western Medical Center, Santa Ana, he served as Chief of Staff from 2002 until 2004.
In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Fitzgibbons is a member of the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the Infectious Disease Society of America, the HIV Medical Association, the American Society for Microbiology, and the Orange County Medical Association.
With an unwavering commitment to his speciality, he is board-certified in both internal medicine and infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with prevention, the diagnosis, and treatment of infections. An infectious disease specialist's practice also consists of managing nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections.
