Towson Roofing Pros Offers Advice on Installing Torch Down Roofing on A Parapet Wall
May 9, 2023
May 09, 2023 - /PressAdvantage/ - Towson Roofing Pros, a residential and commercial roofing contractor based in Towson, MD, is offering advice on the best way to apply, maintain, and repair torch-down roofing on parapet walls.
Torch-down roofing, also known as modified bitumen roofing, is a popular choice for flat or low-slope roofs due to its durability and longevity. During application, a propane torch is used to heat the roofing material so that it adheres to the underlying surface, and hence the name. Apart from the roof deck, torch-down roofing can be applied to parapet walls too to add an extra layer of protection at the edges of the roof.
“To install torch down roofing on a parapet wall,” says the spokesperson for Towson Roofing Pros, “you start by measuring out material so that it goes over the upper edge of the parapet wall and you have still enough of an overlap with the cant strip on the roof deck. We recommend 6 to 8 inches. Secure the piece at the top before attaching the side lap on the roof deck. When it comes time to add the next layer, ensure that the granules on the end lap are removed for a smooth overlap and strong adhesion. We also recommend working in short sections at a time as installing torch-down roofing vertically becomes difficult with longer cuts of the material.”
To maintain torch-down roofing, it’s important to regularly inspect it for any damage or signs of wear and tear. The surface should be kept clean by removing any debris or leaves that may accumulate on the roof. Property owners can also use a pressure washer, at low pressure, to clean the surface if necessary. Finally, repairing torch-down roofing involves applying roofing cement or adhesive to the damaged area for small cracks or holes, whereas, for larger repairs, an entire section may have to be replaced.

My roof was getting old and shingles kept blowing off during storms. The roofer came out and inspected my roof and determined that it needed to be replaced. He provided numerous photos and explained why a replacement was a better choice than a roof repair. I appreciated their thorough approach and am very happy with my new roof.”
