Wendy Reese is a Port Saint Lucie wedding officiant, registered notary public, and ordained minister. Through her business, Wendy Weds You, she has performed weddings at many local venues for cherished clients. Most recently, Reese performed her daughter’s wedding, a moment that she wasn’t certain would come.
Reese’s 27-year old daughter, Melissa, spent eight weeks in the ICU recovering from COVID-19 with her mother and future husband at her side. Reese has just debuted her memoir, ‘The Mother in the Chair’, which chronicles her experiences as a mom caring for her adult daughter in perhaps the most unthinkable of circumstances.
Melissa was 38 weeks pregnant with her third child when she tested positive for COVID-19. Her symptoms worsened until her medical care team decided to perform a cesarean section to save the baby and attempt to take some burden off of Melissa’s exhausted body. Still, Reese was told her daughter might not survive.
“Melissa’s story is not about medical science; in fact, it is not really medical at all,” said Reese. “This is a story of hope, emotion, and feeling. It is a story of strength and faith and the power of love.”
‘The Mother in the Chair’ tells the ups and downs of Melissa’s experience and recovery from COVID-19 in a way that mirrors what so many loved ones have felt and seen. Reese details how she was told that Melissa couldn’t receive lifesaving treatment due to shortages, but as they were preparing for Melissa’s death, a new doctor came to tell them there was hope: the treatment had been secured. This is just one of the many harrowing moments Reese openly shares in her new memoir.
In the end of the book, readers learn Melissa’s fate. She is wed, by her mother, in the backyard of a close family member.
“This is Melissa’s story,” said Reese. “She is the one who suffered so horribly, but it is also my story. I was not the patient in the bed; I was the mother in the chair.”
